This sculpture was inspired by the photograph captured by Pulitzer award winning Photographer Kevin Carter in 1993 about the famine in Sudan. He followed and photographed a small child on her way to a feeding station. Behind her sat a vulture waiting.
I sculpted the African Child over an intense 24-hour period and cried often during the sculpt as I felt I was bringing her into the world. This was and is a confronting sculpt. Often it is easier to look away from things that confront or sadden us but sometimes it is this pain that provides us with the impetus to contribute to change.
